Libra Award – Rules

1. Before submitting a proposal, the translator must confirm, from the Polish publisher or copyright holder, that the English-language rights are available.
2. The translator should submit to JPEF an outline of the novel or short stories they wish to translate, together with an argument for its potential success in the English market, and 8,000 words of sample translation, together with two copies of the work in the original Polish (not pdf).
3. Sample translations should be submitted by 31 December of each year; JPEF will assess the proposal and respond by April of the following year. No more than 2 awards will be granted in any calendar year.
4. On acceptance of the Libra Award, the translator – armed with the Award guarantee – will aim to secure a contract for publication by a UK publisher. The offer of the Award is valid for two years from the date of its granting.
5. JPEF will pay the translator for the translation at a minimum rate of £95 per thousand words, payable half on signature of a contract with a publisher, half on publication.
6. On signature of a contract with a UK publisher, JPEF guarantees a contribution of up to £5,000 towards agreed promotion of the book.
